Amarnath Yatra: registration, health certificate and what to pack
A step-by-step checklist for the Shri Amarnath Yatra — from the compulsory health certificate to choosing between Baltal, Pahalgam and the helicopter.

The Shri Amarnath Yatra takes place each summer, usually from early July to Raksha Bandhan. Lakhs of pilgrims walk or fly to the cave at 3,888 m to see the naturally formed ice lingam.
Step 1: Get your Compulsory Health Certificate
Only doctors and hospitals authorised by the state governments can issue the CHC. Book early — slots fill up as soon as registration opens.
Step 2: Register
Registration is done online on the Shrine Board website or at designated bank branches. You choose your route and date at this stage, and later collect an RFID card that you must carry.
Step 3: Choose your route
- Baltal: 14 km, steep, can be done in one day up and down.
- Pahalgam (Chandanwari): 48 km over 3–4 days, gentler gradients, beautiful scenery past Sheshnag.
- Helicopter: Baltal or Pahalgam to Panjtarni, then 6 km to the cave.
What to pack
- Waterproof jacket and trousers
- Warm layers, gloves and cap
- Trekking shoes with grip, not sports shoes
- Torch, water bottle, dry fruits
- Photo ID, RFID card and CHC
